Born in 1980 in Sydney, Crouch received a B.A. in 2002 and an M.F.A. in 2005 from the College of Fine Arts, UNSW. He completed three years of study at the Charlie Sheard Studio School in 2010 and has been based in Japan since 2014.
Combining acrylic painting methods such as pouring with old master oil painting techniques, he works across still life, portraiture and landscape painting conventions. Recent exhibitions have also included sculptures constructed from bamboo and fabric. In his work, the familiar intersects with the otherworldly. Elements of folklore and spirituality sneak into recognisable settings and merge with personal histories and narratives.
The spirit and aesthetic of 1990’s rave culture is an enduring influence on his work. Rave’s re-imagining of spaces and structures, treatment of colour and form on event flyers, and dualities of darkness and light inform Crouch’s visual language.
