The Japan Airlines Sky Museum at Haneda Airport features a display of the airline’s uniforms, from the 1970s to the present. The display reflects the corresponding fashions of the time, with the older garments being very impractical for their role. The mannequins wearing the uniforms are anatomically peculiar: impossibly thin with elongated limbs and oval-shaped heads. The inconsistencies in the presentation stand out: the models’ poses are all similar but not quite the same, some limbs are placed at awkward angles and some wear black pumps while most are barefoot. The lack of footwear on the models is particularly surprising, considering the recent attention that corporate footwear policies in Japan have received and the #kutoo movement. In April JAL introduced new uniforms and lifted the regulation that female employees must wear high heel shoes. ANA followed in May with similar changes. 

These events coincided with the introduction of new flight paths for Haneda Airport’s east/west runways. The additional flight capacity was to cater for an influx of tourists expected during the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo—but the visitors never came. The coronavirus pandemic grounded flights and postponed the sporting event. Ironically, as commercial passenger jets disappeared from most of the world’s skies, they appeared for the first time above central Tokyo as restrictions on the airspace were eased. Images of parked planes and deserted airports have come to define 2020. Currently, flying is something we remember, rather than something we do.

 羽田空港のJAL工場見学〜SKY MUSEUMでは、1970年代から現在までの日本航空の歴代制服が展示されている。展示ケース内の制服は、各時代の流行のスタイルを反映しており、時代の古いものは特に非実用的だ。制服を着たマネキンはみな解剖学的に不自然だ――ありえないほど細身で、手足は異常に長く、頭部は卵型をしている。マネキンのポーズはどれも似かよっているが、手足が変な角度に曲げられているものもあり、全く同じではない。黒のパンプスを履いているマネキンもあるが、大半が裸足で、展示方法のちぐはぐさも目立つ。特に、最近注目されている日本企業のヒール靴着用規定やそれに反対する#kutoo運動を踏まえると、マネキンが靴を履いていないことに驚いた。今年4月、日本航空は新制服を導入し、女性従業員に対するヒールの着用規定を廃止した。5月にはANAが日本航空に続いて同様の変更を行った。

 これらの一連の出来事は、羽田空港の東西滑走路発着の新しい飛行ルートの開設と重なった。新規路線開設・増便は、2020年に東京での開催が予定されていた夏季オリンピックによる観光客の増加を見越したものだった。しかし、東京に観光客が訪れることはなかった。新型コロナウイルスの世界的流行により、増便されるはずだったフライトは欠航し、オリンピックは延期された。皮肉なことに、世界のほぼすべての空から民間旅客機が消えた一方で、飛行制限緩和により東京都心の上空に旅客機が姿を現した。駐機場に埋まる飛行機や閑散とした空港は2020年の世相を表す光景となった。現在、空の旅は私たちの記憶の中にのみ残され、実際に行うものではない。
